  •                                                      LTJG Marilyn Gilbreath, NSCC -  Commanding Officer, PYRO Division

     

     

    Civilian job: Optometrist specializing in working with visually impaired patients.

    Length of time with USNSCC: A parent participant since September 2006, Instructor/officer with Pyro since January 2007.

    Reason why I do this: My son was in the program for 3 years. I saw him grow in leadership abilities     as well as learn more about being on a team.  He had incredible experiences at trainings from California to Chicago.

     What I bring to the program: I saw a need in the program for an adult to handle the paperwork and help with organizing details. It's been an honor for me to work with the cadets and their parents, helping Pyro Division to experience opportunities of a lifetime!

  •                                                      ENS John Funkhouser - Executive Officer, PYRO Division



    Civilian job: Business Administrator and Vocational Instructor (among other things) at a private school for boys in Sebastopol.

    Length of time with USNSCC: A parent participant since 2002, Instructor with Pyro Division since January 2009.

    Reason why I do this: The USNSCC is a unique organization that allows young people to learn and experience things that are rare (approaching non-existent) in contemporary life, such as discipline, self control, team over individual, pride in real (versus pretend) achievement, following and giving orders, etc.. Add to this the unparalleled training
    opportunities and experiences available, and the Sea Cadet Corps is something worthwhile, valuable, and necessary.

    Military Experience:     U.S. Marine Corps, Service in Vietnam

    What I bring to the program: I feel I have the ability to teach skills and concepts clearly and easily. Twenty-five plus years working with boys and young men gives me great confidence in dealing with cadets.
